Numerous studies have been undertaken to highlight the positive role AI can have in promoting educational outcomes for children, especially for children falling behind. While AI is an innovative tool that can support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, it also poses risks for children, such as to their privacy and security. Additionally, there are growing concerns around AI algorithms causing increased exclusion and discrimination. As such, while many institutions understand the power of AI, they sometimes lack a data strategy or practical measures in place to implement a strong AI educational system.
Bringing together leaders in the fields of education and technology we aim to explore how AI, socially-assistive robots and personalised learning can improve education outcomes and support mental health and wellbeing, especially in crises and with vulnerable groups like refugees, and examine questions of privacy, ethics and safety in deploying AI and robots in classrooms. Through discussion, we hope to build strong momentum for more educational partners to introduce AI and robots safely in classrooms.
