The 2025 Bayt Yakan summer school features a programme of workshops in traditional crafts for families from Al-Darb Al-Ahmar, delivered by alumni from the Jameel House of Traditional Arts in Cairo.
Seven alumni of the Jameel House in Cairo – Reham Wahba, Sara El Sayed, Amal Mostafa, Ibrahim Waheed, Alya Gamal, Areej Niazi and Hoda Haro – lead the programme, which also includes a visit to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation.
Participants will explore traditional craftsmanship by producing handmade backgammon sets rooted in Cairo’s design heritage, having developed skills in geometric design, Arabic calligraphy, brass inlay, wood veneer and stencil printing.
The programme aims to engage children and their families in creative activity and raise awareness of the area's local architectural and craft heritage.
An exhibition and closing ceremony will be held on the 7 September 2025 following the end of the programme.
