Egypt launches Climate Labs with J-PAL MENA

Egypt's Minister of Planning and Economic Development HE Dr Hala El Said spoke at the opening ceremony of Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Middle East and North Africa at AUC (J-PAL MENA)'s co-hosted Partnership Development for Climate Adaptation in Arab States conference in Cairo on Tuesday, 26 September 2023. During her remarks, the minister announced the launch of the Clean Air and Water Lab in Egypt. The lab, supported by Community Jameel, is part of a network of J-PAL and C40-led Climate Labs embedded with local policymaking teams that address critical climate challenges through evidence-based solutions. The Clean Air and Water Lab in Egypt will engage national-level government teams to leverage J-PAL insights for the development of evidence-based policy around air pollution and water issues.

George Richards, director of Community Jameel, said of the Climate Labs: “Communities across the world continue to face challenges in accessing clean air and water, a threat to human safety that has only been exacerbated by the climate crisis, along with rising temperatures and other hazards. Through our collaboration with J-PAL and C40 in creating climate policy labs embedded in city, state and national governments in Africa and South and West Asia, we are committed to advancing innovative and science-based approaches to policymaking that can help hundreds of millions of people enjoy healthier lives.”
