The Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab Middle East and North Africa (J-PAL MENA), based at the American University in Cairo, together with Community Jameel, announced the launch of the Clean Air and Water Lab in Egypt during the Partnership development for climate adaptation in the Arab states. The lab will address Egypt's most pressing air and water challenges as government-embedded teams leverage J-PAL research insights to co-diagnose issues and develop effective policy innovations through randomised evaluations and rigorous use of high-quality data.
George Richards, director of Community Jameel spoke at the event, saying, “Accelerating the pace of climate action is more urgent than ever, and we are committed to promoting policies and solutions based on scientific research findings to ensure that the actions taken by governments have the maximum possible impact. In this regard, the Clean Air and Water Lab, which was recently launched in Egypt, in partnership with J-PAL MENA, will generate realistic and accurate data that will contribute to making effective policies and enhance opportunities to provide clean air and water to millions of Egyptians in the face of climate change. Through this conference, we will be able to support climate actors in the region and provide them with the necessary data to build solutions and partnerships that will ultimately lead to coordinating efforts to confront the worsening climate crisis.”
Community Jameel, the independent global organization dedicated to advancing science and learning, and the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Laboratory in the Middle East and North Africa (J-PAL MENA), based at the American University in Cairo, announced their intention to launch a new air and water laboratory under the umbrella of the Abdul Latif Jameel Laboratory. Jameel Against Poverty (J-PAL).
This initiative comes in response to the real challenges faced by residents of the Middle East and North Africa region, where 90% of children already suffer from an acute and severe shortage of water supplies, while the new laboratory aims to provide the opportunity to integrate air and water policies based on practical research outcomes into the Egyptian government’s agenda. In addition to providing millions of people with access to clean air and water.
Community Jameel supports at least five laboratories operating under the umbrella of the Abdul Latif Jameel Anti-Poverty Laboratory and focuses in particular on providing supplies of clean air and water at the Egyptian government level, at the city level in Cape Town, and at the state level in India, specifically in the state of Gujarat, Together, they serve approximately 260 million people in the targeted areas. In parallel, the C40 network will lead two other laboratories focused on promoting sustainable urban planning in South and West Asia, with their headquarters in Chennai, India, and the capital, Amman, in Jordan. The partnership will also witness cooperation between the Abdul Latif Jameel Anti-Poverty Laboratory and the C40 Network to benefit from the learning experiences generated from the laboratories’ work.
