Deborah Campbell

Deborah Campbell is the executive director of the Jameel Observatory Climate Resilience Early Warning System (Jameel Observatory | CREWSnet) project, a cutting-edge platform that forecasts the local impacts of climate change on people’s lives, homes and livelihoods developed through a partnership between BRAC, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Community Jameel. She is a senior staff scientist and co-lead for MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s Climate Change Initiative. Her work focuses on leveraging the Laboratory’s multidisciplinary research and development expertise and collaborations within the United States and around the world to innovate new systems and solutions to contribute to the global response to the climate change challenge.

Working alongside Professor Elfatih Eltahir and John Aldridge, Deborah develops the Jameel Observatory | CREWSnet forecasting platform which integrates state-of-the-art climate science, impact modelling and accessible decision support tools in order for vulnerable communities to interpret local climate change risk, minimise loss and plan for their futures. The project was selected as one of MIT Climate Grand Challenges flagship projects in 2022 and the Aim for Climate Innovation Sprint in 2023.

She served on MIT’s climate action advisory committee during the development of 'Fast forward: MIT’s climate action plan for the decade', and was a member of the MIT campus–Lincoln Laboratory team that designed and built the MIT COVID-19 Response System. As a senior staff scientist in the Laboratory’s Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Systems Group, Campbell works at the nexus of climate change, health and environmental equity.

Deborah earned a bachelor's of science degree in chemistry from Bates College and a PhD degree in chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
