A breakthrough on “loss and damage,” but also disappointment, at UN climate conference

John Aldridge is the project lead of Jameel Observatory Climate Resilience Early Warning System (JO-CREWSnet), a cutting-edge platform that forecasts the local impacts of climate change on people’s lives, homes and livelihoods developed through a partnership between BRAC, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Community Jameel. He is assistant leader of the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Systems Group at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory, where he has been a member of staff for over 20 years. His team leverages the research and development expertise of the Laboratory’s nearly 4,000 staff in support of humanitarian assistance, economic and social development as well as disaster relief organisations.
Working alongside Professor Elfatih Eltahir and Deborah Campbell, John develops the JO-CREWSnet cutting-edge forecasting platform that integrates state-of-the-art climate science, impact modelling and accessible decision support tools for communities to interpret local risk, minimise loss and plan for their futures. The project was selected as one of MIT Climate Grand Challenges flagship projects in 2022 and the Aim for Climate Innovation Sprint in 2023.
John took a bachelor's degree in optical engineering from the University of Arizona in 2002 and completed his master's in photonics from Boston University in 2005.
