Michael Kremer is an economist and the University Professor in economics and public policy at the University of Chicago. He is the 2019 co-recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics alongside Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee, the co-founders and co-directors of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
A specialist in development economics, Kremer's early research career used randomised control trials to examine the impact of social and economic interventions in developing countries, an approach also deployed and pioneered by Esther Duflo and Abhijit Banerjee. His economic research spans education, health, water and agriculture in developing countries.
He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, a recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and a Presidential Faculty Fellowship, and was named a young global leader by the World Economic Forum.
Michael took a bachelor's degree in social studies (magna cum laude) and a PhD in economics from Harvard University.
