As the British health service faces challenges overcoming a significant patient backlog, a new report by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) and LCP Health Analytics suggests that the NHS should offer routine pre-planned operations at the weekend to reduce the record waiting list and help boost the economy. Lord Darzi of Denham, advisory committee member, Community Jameel and consultant surgeon at Imperial College NHS Trust and the Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust agreed that the report highlights 'compelling policy levers' that policymakers can use to reduce the backlog and echoed arguments that there is both a convincing moral and economic case to 'go further and faster' in working through the NHS backlog of patients.
