Scientists, with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), have discovered a potent new antibiotic called abaucin that can effectively kill a deadly superbug known as Acinetobacter baumannii.
Jim Collins, the faculty lead of life sciences at the MIT Jameel Clinic, expressed his excitement about using AI to combat problematic pathogens like A. baumannii, saying, 'This finding further supports the premise that AI can significantly accelerate and expand our search for novel antibiotics'.
The experimental antibiotic has shown promising results in treating infected wounds in mice and eliminating A. baumannii samples from patients. This breakthrough highlights the revolutionary potential of AI in science and medicine, offering hope in the fight against antibiotic resistance.
