'Teaching at the right level' has transformed classrooms in a Ugandan school into a space that keeps children engaged and motivated, while improving learning outcomes and overall school enrolment. 'Teaching at the right level' is a counteractive teaching methodology initiated by the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the NGO Pratham in India before being successfully implemented in different countries, including Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast. The approach targets the root of learning issues by transforming the structures of education and improves students' foundational literacy and numeracy skills by grouping learners by learning level, not age or grade. Students are grouped through periodic assessment, which takes 10 minutes using simple but standardised assessment tools. In Uganda, a pilot of the methodology is now being delivered at scale.
