In November 2022 the Indian non-profit organisation Seva Mandir hosted Abhijit Banerjee, co-founder and co-director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and winner of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics, to speak at a talk 'Beyond poverty action'. Throughout the discussion, which covered climate action, poverty, water scarcity and youth, Abhijit highlighted the need for greater community action to end poverty and stressed that 'economics is too important to be left to economists'. Abhijit and Seva Mandir's long-standing relationship began in 1996 with a research project evaluating the effectiveness of health and educational programmes in rural and tribal communities in India.
